This book covers the journey of six families as they venture across the Atlantic in the 1600s and 1700s to settle in America. They include Cottrell, Brashear, Lashbrook, Cosby, Taylor, and Campbell. They arrived in Virginia and their descendants journeyed westward though with some staying in Virginia while others ventured into Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. Most of the author's direct lines ended up in Kentucky and Missouri where they forged homes in the wilderness. Many fought and died in War. During the Civil War brothers fought against and sometimes with brothers and fathers both for the Union and the Confederacy.
Their journeys are organized by years and areas and provide background and historical context as each family makes their way westward. Graphs aid the reader in understanding family dynamics and an all-name index facilitates research. Photographs and documents from the author's family collection are included as well as cemetery plots and photographs of grave markers.
